The Hidden Reason You're Still Confused About Fitness (It's Not What You Think)

"The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms." -Socrates

The Foundation of All Understanding

Imagine this: You're in a social situation, and someone confidently declares, "Calories don't matter—it's all about hormones." Another person jumps in a few minutes later with, "Lots of cardio is the only way to lose weight." A third person, who hasn’t seen the inside of a gym in over a decade, chimes in, "Deadlifts are bad for your back, you shouldn’t do them."

Sound familiar? If you've spent any time in fitness conversations, or in conversations about anything really, you've probably heard statements just like these. And here's the frustrating part—everyone seems so certain, yet the advice is a jumbled mess of partial truths and falsehoods.

So why is the fitness world drowning in confusion, conflicting advice, and downright misinformation?

The answer isn't what you might expect. It's not because the science is unclear or because experts disagree on fundamentals. The real culprit is something much simpler, yet far more destructive: misunderstood words.

After 13 years of coaching busy professionals, I've discovered that the biggest barrier to transformation isn't lack of motivation or time—it's the confusion that comes from not understanding basic fitness terminology and concepts. Which makes a newcomer to the space feel like there is an overwhelming amount of information out there. This often leads people to self-sabotage or freeze up through paralysis by analysis. So today, we're going to start to clear some things up and hopefully this will aid you in your fitness journey because I want everyone to be as successful as possible.

***Pro Tip- Unfortunately in the world of health and fitness marketing that we live, grifters run rampant. A large part of their success is dependent upon people’s lack of understanding combined with their strong emotional desire to change. So always be wary and always be learning.***

The Invisible Obstacle Blocking Your Path To Success

Here's a simple test that reveals everything: The next time someone tells you “this food has no nutrients,” ask them one question: “What is a nutrient?”

I guarantee you'll get a blank stare or a moment of silence followed by garbled nonsense. Because here's the truth—most people throwing around fitness advice don't actually understand the basic terms they're using.

It's like trying to have a conversation about football with someone who doesn't know the rules of the game, or discussing buying stock in a company with someone who has never thought about doing the same themselves. How can you possibly make informed decisions about your health when you don't understand the fundamental concepts?

This confusion isn't just frustrating—it's expensive. It costs you time jumping from program to program, money spent on ineffective supplements and courses, and worst of all, the confidence that comes from actually seeing results.

But here's the good news: Once you understand these basic terms, you'll know more about fitness than 90% of people giving advice online. You'll be able to spot BS more easily and make decisions based on facts rather than marketing.

Why Definitions Matter More Than You Think

Think about any skill you’ve mastered in your professional life. Whether it is business, technology, law, management, medicine or anything else, you had to learn the basic language of the subject first. You couldn't effectively progress until you understood the fundamental terminology and concepts.

Fitness is no different, yet somehow we expect to navigate this complex field without understanding basic words like energy, chemical, or nutrient. It's like trying to play a game without knowing the rules. (Or talking about a game, like the previously discussed football example).

When you don't understand the words being used, one of two things happens:

  • You guess at meanings based on context (which is often wrong)

  • You believe whatever sounds most convincing (which is often marketing)

Neither approach usually leads to great results. Both can lead to frustration, wasted effort, and eventually giving up.

But when you begin to understand key terms and concepts, your situation changes. Suddenly, you can evaluate information critically. You can spot when someone is using scientific-sounding language to sell you something that doesn't work. You now can make informed decisions about your health instead of hoping and guessing.

Your Fitness Vocabulary Foundation

Here are TEN ESSENTIAL terms that every person serious about transformation needs to understand. (Actually, I threw in a bonus word to make a total of eleven terms). I plan on adding a similar amount of fitness vocabulary words to the next few newsletters as well. Master these, and you'll have a clearer understanding of fitness than most people. Here is the first batch of terms:

Energy

Energy is the power received from food and other sources to do work or produce motion. In your body, this means the fuel needed for everything from breathing to deadlifting (my favorite). Additional thought: Your body can't create energy from nothing—it must come from somewhere (food, stored fat, muscle tissue).

Matter

Matter is any physical substance that occupies space and can be moved with force. Your body is matter. Food is matter. Additional thought: The matter in your body can only come from the matter you consume—you literally are what you eat.

Chemistry

Chemistry is the science concerned with how substances interact and change. Additional thought: Everything in your body—digestion, muscle building, fat loss—is chemistry in action.

Chemical

A chemical is any substance that can undergo a change or reaction. Additional thought: Everything is chemicals—water, protein, vitamins. The fear of "chemicals" in food is misguided because all food is made of chemicals. Of course, certain substances react negatively with the body.

Organism

An organism is a single living thing. Additional thought: Your body is one integrated organism where everything affects everything else.

Cell

A cell is the basic unit of all living organisms. Additional thought: Your fitness results happen at the cellular level—muscle cells growing, fat cells shrinking.

Healthy

Healthy means having good strength, high energy levels, and being free from pain, illness, damage, and dysfunction. Additional thought: True health isn't just about looking good—it's about optimal function.

Nutrient

A nutrient is a substance an organism needs to live and grow. Additional thought: Your body needs both macronutrients (protein, carbs, fats) for energy and growth, plus micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) for optimal function.

Food

Food is material taken into the body to provide nutrients needed for energy and growth. Additional thought: If it doesn't provide nutrients or energy, it's not really food.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the process of getting and using food and nutrients to grow, build tissues, and stay healthy. Additional thought: Nutrition isn't just what you eat—it's how your body uses what you eat.

Bonus Term - Nourish

To nourish means to provide the substances needed for growth, health, and good condition. Additional thought: True nutrition nourishes your body rather than just filling it.

Your New Advantage

Now that you understand some fundamental terms, you have started down the path that leads towards a greater understanding of fitness!

When someone tells you "calories don't matter," you'll understand they're basically saying "energy doesn't matter"—which makes no sense when you understand that energy is required for all work, including the work of changing your body.

When you see a product claiming to be 'chemical-free,' you'll understand they're making an impossible claim since all matter is made of chemicals—and you can spot the marketing nonsense immediately.

With this foundation, you can cut through the noise and focus on what actually works.
